Common Questions About Detox

Get quick answers to some of the questions we get asked the most.

We provide medical detoxification for the full range of substance use disorders, including alcohol, opioids such as heroin, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers, benzodiazepines, and cocaine. Each substance produces different withdrawal symptoms and risks, so your detox protocol is built around what you have been using, how long, and your overall health.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is a core part of our detox programs. Depending on your situation, that may include buprenorphine for opioid withdrawal, naltrexone to reduce cravings, or comfort medications for sleep, anxiety, and nausea. Everything is prescribed and monitored around the clock by our medical team, and nothing is one-size-fits-all.

Most stays run 5 to 10 days, but the substance sets the timeline. Alcohol and benzodiazepines often require a gradual, medically managed taper, while opioid withdrawal tends to peak early and ease within a week. We do not rush anyone out the door; you stay until withdrawal symptoms are managed and you are stable enough for the next level of care.

We strongly advise against it. Withdrawal from alcohol and benzodiazepines can cause seizures and other complications that become medical emergencies without warning, and unmanaged opioid withdrawal is a leading setup for relapse and overdose. Supervised detoxification exists because the first week is the most dangerous part of recovery to do alone.

Yes. Co-occurring disorders are the rule, not the exception. Many clients arrive with depression, anxiety, or trauma underneath the drug addiction, and our dual diagnosis approach means mental health services begin during detox rather than after it. Individual counseling, group counseling, and peer support start as soon as you are physically able to participate.

Detox stabilizes the body; treatment rebuilds the life. Most clients step down to a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or intensive outpatient program (IOP) at our sister facility, Garden State Treatment Center in Sparta, New Jersey, where evidence-based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and 12-step facilitation continue the work, along with family counseling and relapse prevention. Telehealth and continuing care options keep support in place long after discharge.

Most major plans cover medical detox and substance abuse treatment, and our team handles insurance verification quickly and confidentially before you commit to anything. Garden State Detox is accredited by The Joint Commission, so both you and your insurer know the care here meets the same standards applied to hospitals.
